However, it is most common in the sigmoid colon (the S-shaped part of the intestine), where about 95% of patients with diverticulosis develop it.<span class=\"ql-inline-citation\" data-cite=\"13\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-2\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>In diverticular disease, or diverticulosis, pouches called diverticula form in weak areas of the lining of the digestive tract.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-4\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>Diet, genetics, and several other issues play a role in the formation of diverticula. Diverticulosis is a chronic disease that occurs throughout most people&#8217;s lives, with diverticulum formation increasing after the age of 40.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-14\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>Diverticulitis is a more acute form of diverticular disease in which sacs that form in the gastrointestinal tract become inflamed or infected. Less than 5% of people with diverticular disease develop diverticulitis. However, this form of diverticular disease results in approximately 200,000 hospitalizations per year in the United States.<span class=\"ql-inline-citation\" data-cite=\"3\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"heading-toc\" id=\"toc-diverticular-disease-symptoms\"\/> <\/p>\n<h2 id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-18\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block health-sc-block-heading mntl-sc-block-heading\"> <span class=\"mntl-sc-block-heading__text\">    Symptoms of diverticular disease <\/span> <\/h2>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-19\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>For many people, diverticular disease can develop over time without any symptoms.  It occurs in less than 20% of people under age 40, and prevalence increases to approximately 40-60% by age 60 and 75% by age 80.<span class=\"ql-inline-citation\" data-cite=\"12\"\/><span class=\"ql-inline-citation\" data-cite=\"1\"\/><span class=\"ql-inline-citation\" data-cite=\"2\"\/>    Because diverticular disease is not something people are aware of, it is usually diagnosed only during a routine colon exam or when symptoms occur.\n<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-22\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-subheading\"> <span class=\"mntl-sc-block-subheading__text\">    Symptoms of diverticulosis <\/span> <\/h3>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-23\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>Most people with diverticulosis do not notice any symptoms, and only about 25% develop the disease.<span class=\"ql-inline-citation\" data-cite=\"7\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-25\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>When symptoms occur, they are often vague or shared with other gastrointestinal problems. Examples include:<span class=\"ql-inline-citation\" data-cite=\"3\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-29\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>More severe diverticulosis can cause problems such as:<span class=\"ql-inline-citation\" data-cite=\"3\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-36\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-subheading\"> <span class=\"mntl-sc-block-subheading__text\">    symptoms of diverticulitis <\/span> <\/h3>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-37\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>Diverticulitis is a specific acute form of diverticular disease that occurs when the diverticular sacs become inflamed, inflamed, or infected.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-39\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>The most common symptoms reported with diverticulitis are:<span class=\"ql-inline-citation\" data-cite=\"6\"\/><span class=\"ql-inline-citation\" data-cite=\"5\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<ul id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-41\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<li>Abdominal pain and\/or tenderness (usually on the left side)<\/li>\n<li>heat<\/li>\n<li>nausea<\/li>\n<li>vomiting<\/li>\n<li>cold<\/li>\n<li>convulsions<\/li>\n<li>constipation<\/li>\n<li>Changes in bowel habits<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-46\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-subheading\"> <span class=\"mntl-sc-block-subheading__text\">    Symptoms of segmental colitis with diverticulosis (SCAD) <\/span> <\/h3>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-47\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>Segmental colitis associated with diverticulosis (SCAD) is a rare form of inflammation that affects part of the colon.  Symptoms of SCAD can be similar to those of IBD, such as abdominal pain, bleeding, diarrhea, and fever.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-49\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>The exact cause of SCAD is not completely understood. However, some data suggest that there may be some overlap in the underlying causes of SCAD and IBD.<span class=\"ql-inline-citation\" data-cite=\"15\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-51\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>SCAD usually occurs without symptoms of IBD or similar symptoms such as fever or other signs of infection. There are several differences between the two conditions, including disease progression, complications, and the need for long-term treatment.<span class=\"ql-inline-citation\" data-cite=\"15\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-53\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>SCAD can also cause many complications, including:<span class=\"ql-inline-citation\" data-cite=\"14\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<ul id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-55\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<li>bleeding<\/li>\n<li>intestinal perforation<\/li>\n<li>inflammation<\/li>\n<li>Abscess formation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span class=\"heading-toc\" id=\"toc-what-causes-diverticular-disease\"\/> <\/p>\n<h2 id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-59\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block health-sc-block-heading mntl-sc-block-heading\"> <span class=\"mntl-sc-block-heading__text\">    What causes diverticular disease? <\/span> <\/h2>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-60\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>Although several factors are involved in the formation of diverticular sacs, the prevailing theory is that the formation of diverticular sacs is due to a low-fiber diet and constant pressure from straining during defecation.<span class=\"ql-inline-citation\" data-cite=\"6\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-62\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>Other factors include genetic and connective tissue disorders, hormonal changes, and neuromuscular disorders that can cause hernias (ruptures) of the lining of the gastrointestinal tract.<span class=\"ql-inline-citation\" data-cite=\"2\"\/><span class=\"ql-inline-citation\" data-cite=\"1\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-64\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>Although no specific bacteria has been found to cause the infection and inflammation of diverticulitis, diet and lifestyle choices are thought to play a major role. Specifically, low-fiber diets, smoking, and lack of exercise are factors that increase the risk of developing diverticular disease and inflammation.\n<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-67\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-subheading\"> <span class=\"mntl-sc-block-subheading__text\">    What are the risk factors for diverticular disease? <\/span> <\/h3>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-68\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>Low-fiber diets, eating too much red meat, and other dietary choices associated with the Western diet are associated with increased prevalence of diverticular disease. Additionally, lack of exercise and smoking can also increase your risk.<span class=\"ql-inline-citation\" data-cite=\"2\"\/><span class=\"ql-inline-citation\" data-cite=\"3\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-70\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>Gender and hormones may also be involved. In general, men are more likely to develop diverticular disease, but women&#8217;s risk increases if they are receiving hormone therapy, such as treatment for menopause.<span class=\"ql-inline-citation\" data-cite=\"2\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-72\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>Additionally, although diverticulosis is more common in Caucasians, African Americans are more likely to develop complications such as diverticular bleeding.<span class=\"ql-inline-citation\" data-cite=\"2\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-74\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>The use of certain drugs may increase the chance of developing diverticulosis or diverticulitis. This includes the regular or continued use of drugs such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and immunosuppressants.<span class=\"ql-inline-citation\" data-cite=\"2\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"heading-toc\" id=\"toc-diagnosing-diverticular-disease\"\/> <\/p>\n<h2 id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-76\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block health-sc-block-heading mntl-sc-block-heading\"> <span class=\"mntl-sc-block-heading__text\">    Diagnosis of diverticular disease <\/span> <\/h2>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-77\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>The diagnosis of diverticular disease is often made by chance, and health care providers are not intentionally looking for the disease because of specific symptoms. Diagnosis is often made with a routine colonoscopy, but some colonoscopies can help diagnose symptoms that may be associated with diverticular disease, such as bleeding.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-79\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>Diverticular sacs may also be seen on imaging tests such as barium x-rays or computed tomography (CT) scans.<span class=\"ql-inline-citation\" data-cite=\"5\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"heading-toc\" id=\"toc-how-is-diverticular-disease-treated\"\/> <\/p>\n<h2 id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-81\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block health-sc-block-heading mntl-sc-block-heading\"> <span class=\"mntl-sc-block-heading__text\">    How is diverticular disease treated? <\/span> <\/h2>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-82\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>If diverticular disease develops without symptoms, treatment is rarely required. Fiber-rich foods loosen stools, making them easier to pass and reducing strain on the intestinal wall.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-97\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>Fiber-rich foods that can help improve diverticular disease include:\n<\/p>\n<ul id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-99\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<li>beans<\/li>\n<li>brown rice<\/li>\n<li>whole grain<\/li>\n<li>fruits<\/li>\n<li>vegetables<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-101\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>Previously, health care providers recommended that people with diverticular disease avoid certain foods that tend to clog diverticula, such as nuts, seeds, and popcorn.
