This dysfunction can change the speed, strength, and coordination of the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, and large intestine.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-2\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>When muscles do not function properly, it is known as myopathy. If nerves that affect the gastrointestinal tract are involved, the condition is associated with neuropathy.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-4\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>This article describes several types of movement disorders and their symptoms. Some diseases tend to affect certain areas of the digestive system.\n<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-11\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-subheading\"> <span class=\"mntl-sc-block-subheading__text\">    Esophageal dysmotility <\/span> <\/h3>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-12\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>The esophagus is commonly affected by movement disorders. The most common is achalasia, which is caused by nerve cells losing control of muscle function and degenerating. This prevents the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) from closing properly.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-14\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>Other types of esophageal motility disorders include esophagogastric junction outflow obstruction and major and minor peristalsis disorders. These main obstacles include:<span class=\"ql-inline-citation\" data-cite=\"8\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<ul id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-16\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<li>Distal (diffuse) esophageal spasm<\/li>\n<li>hypercontractile esophagus<\/li>\n<li>lack of contractility<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-18\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>Mild disorders of esophageal peristalsis include:\n<\/p>\n<ul id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-20\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<li>inefficient esophageal motility<\/li>\n<li>Fragmented peristalsis<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-23\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-subheading\"> <span class=\"mntl-sc-block-subheading__text\">    gastric motility disorder <\/span> <\/h3>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-24\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>Many movement disorders affect the stomach. These include cyclic vomiting syndrome, which usually affects children. This is thought to be related to the way neurons in the brain send messages to the gastrointestinal tract.<span class=\"ql-inline-citation\" data-cite=\"9\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-26\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>Other movement disorders that affect the stomach include:\n<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-31\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-subheading\"> <span class=\"mntl-sc-block-subheading__text\">    intestinal motility disorder <\/span> <\/h3>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-32\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>These conditions affect either the small intestine or the large intestine. Small intestinal motility disorders include:\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-36\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>Health conditions that can cause impaired colon motility include:\n<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"heading-toc\" id=\"toc-symptoms-of-dysmotility\"\/> <\/p>\n<h2 id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-40\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block health-sc-block-heading mntl-sc-block-heading\"> <span class=\"mntl-sc-block-heading__text\">    Symptoms of movement disorders <\/span> <\/h2>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-41\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>Symptoms of movement dysfunction vary depending on which area of \u200b\u200bthe digestive system is affected and what type of movement problem is occurring.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-43\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>For example, dysphagia (difficulty swallowing) is a major symptom of upper gastrointestinal motility disorders.<span class=\"ql-inline-citation\" data-cite=\"10\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-45\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>Other symptoms of dysmotility in this part of the gastrointestinal tract include:\n<\/p>\n<ul id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-47\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<li>abdominal pain<\/li>\n<li>burning or discomfort<\/li>\n<li>vomiting<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-49\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>If the lower gastrointestinal tract is involved, symptoms are more likely to cause lower abdominal pain, cramps, diarrhea or constipation.<span class=\"ql-inline-citation\" data-cite=\"7\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-51\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>The speed of gastrointestinal function is a factor in dysmotility. Rapid dysfunction usually causes diarrhea as the contents of the digestive system are rapidly pushed through, producing soft, watery stools.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-53\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>Constipation occurs due to movement disorders that slow transit times and fluid movement, resulting in hard stools that are difficult to defecate.\n<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"heading-toc\" id=\"toc-what-causes-a-motility-disorder\"\/> <\/p>\n<h2 id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-57\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block health-sc-block-heading mntl-sc-block-heading\"> <span class=\"mntl-sc-block-heading__text\">    What causes movement disorders? <\/span> <\/h2>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-58\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>Normally, the muscle contractions of the digestive system work in a coordinated and orderly manner to facilitate the digestion of ingested food. Dysmotility may cause food, chyme, partially digested food, and stomach acid to move slowly or quickly through the gastrointestinal tract.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-60\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>Changes from normal motility can cause gastrointestinal symptoms.<span class=\"ql-inline-citation\" data-cite=\"1\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-62\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>Movement disorders can occur as a result of nerve and muscle dysfunction in any area of \u200b\u200bthe digestive system. Although the cause is often unknown, many underlying conditions can cause movement disorders.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-64\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>For example, about 9% of people treated for symptoms of dysphagia, chest pain, or reflux disease have a rheumatic disease such as lupus.<span class=\"ql-inline-citation\" data-cite=\"11\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-66\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>Many drugs can affect the function of nerves and muscles in the gastrointestinal tract. For example, some cases of chronic intestinal pseudoobstruction (CIP) are associated with certain genetic mutations.<span class=\"ql-inline-citation\" data-cite=\"15\"\/> Researchers continue to identify genes that affect motility and may be involved in various diseases.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span class=\"heading-toc\" id=\"toc-treatment-for-motility-disorders\"\/> <\/p>\n<h2 id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-69\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block health-sc-block-heading mntl-sc-block-heading\"> <span class=\"mntl-sc-block-heading__text\">    Treatment of movement disorders <\/span> <\/h2>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-70\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>Treatment for movement disorders depends on several factors, including the type of movement disorder, the person&#8217;s overall health, and any other underlying or associated medical conditions.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-72\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>A gastroenterologist or movement disorder specialist will first diagnose the disorder. In addition to a physical exam, tests used to diagnose movement disorder conditions include:\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-76\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>In most cases, treatment includes dietary and lifestyle changes, medications, surgery, or a combination of these treatments.<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-78\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>For example, achalasia can be treated with calcium channel blockers, which restrict blood flow to the esophageal sphincter, while Botox injections can help relax the esophagus and alleviate swallowing problems.<span class=\"ql-inline-citation\" data-cite=\"13\"\/> It can also be treated with a minimally invasive surgery called transoral endoscopic myotomy (POEM).\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-80\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>A dyskinesia diet with added soluble fiber can help improve conditions such as IBS, which can be accompanied by impaired bowel movement or constipation.
