Contact your health care provider right away if you have symptoms of diverticulitis, especially if you have any of the following symptoms:<span class=\"ql-inline-citation\" data-cite=\"5\"\/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Rectal bleeding\/blood in the stool<\/li>\n<li>Persistent fever greater than 100.4 \u00b0F (38 \u00b0C)<\/li>\n<li>nausea, vomiting, chills<\/li>\n<li>Abdominal or back pain that comes on suddenly, worsens, or is severe<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span class=\"heading-toc\" id=\"toc-how-diverticulitis-impacts-the-digestive-system\"\/> <\/p>\n<h2 id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-13\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block health-sc-block-heading mntl-sc-block-heading\"> <span class=\"mntl-sc-block-heading__text\">    How diverticulitis affects the digestive system <\/span> <\/h2>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-14\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>Diverticulitis begins as a chronic disease called diverticulosis. In diverticulosis, small pouches (<span data-tts=\"true\">diverticulum<\/span>) or multiple pouches (<span data-tts=\"true\">diverticulum<\/span>) develop and push outward through the wall of the colon (part of the large intestine), usually at weak points. In the United States, this usually occurs in the lower part of the colon, the sigmoid colon.<span class=\"ql-inline-citation\" data-cite=\"2\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-16\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>Diverticulitis is usually an acute condition (sudden onset over a short period of time) and occurs when these sacs become inflamed and\/or infected. This can occur when feces and undigested food become trapped in these bags.<span class=\"ql-inline-citation\" data-cite=\"6\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-18\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>Diverticulitis can occur suddenly. Prompt treatment is important because if left untreated, diverticulitis can lead to serious complications, including:<span class=\"ql-inline-citation\" data-cite=\"2\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<ul id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-20\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<li>Abscess (pus-filled area caused by infection)<\/li>\n<li>Intestinal obstruction (partial or total obstruction that restricts or prevents the movement of stool, body fluids, food, or air through the intestines)<\/li>\n<li>Fistula (abnormal tunnel line passage between the colon and another part of the body, such as the vagina or bladder)<\/li>\n<li>perforation (hole) in the colon<\/li>\n<li>Bleeding (from the diverticulum to the rectum)<span class=\"ql-inline-citation\" data-cite=\"10\"\/><\/li>\n<li>Stenosis (narrowing of the colon, making it difficult for stool to pass)<span class=\"ql-inline-citation\" data-cite=\"8\"\/><\/li>\n<li><span data-tts=\"true\">peritonitis<\/span> (intra-abdominal infection that can be very serious)<span class=\"ql-inline-citation\" data-cite=\"1\"\/><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span class=\"heading-toc\" id=\"toc-changes-in-bowel-habits\"\/> <\/p>\n<h2 id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-22\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block health-sc-block-heading mntl-sc-block-heading\"> <span class=\"mntl-sc-block-heading__text\">    Changes in bowel habits <\/span> <\/h2>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-23\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>Changes in bowel habits or characteristics can cause or develop from diverticulitis.\n<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-26\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-subheading\"> <span class=\"mntl-sc-block-subheading__text\">    exterior <\/span> <\/h3>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-27\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>People with diverticulitis may notice blood or mucus in their stools. This is caused by the rupture of blood vessels within the diverticulum. This blood may:<span class=\"ql-inline-citation\" data-cite=\"10\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<ul id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-29\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<li>come out forcefully from the rectum<\/li>\n<li>The shape of the stool is dark mahogany in color.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-31\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>If a stricture has formed, the stool may become thin or pellet-like.<span class=\"ql-inline-citation\" data-cite=\"8\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-34\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-subheading\"> <span class=\"mntl-sc-block-subheading__text\">    odor <\/span> <\/h3>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-35\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>Diverticulitis can cause a fistula between the colon and bladder, which can cause the urine to smell bad. Similarly, a fistula between the colon and vagina can cause foul-smelling discharge.<span class=\"ql-inline-citation\" data-cite=\"11\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-37\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>Fistulas usually require surgery, so it&#8217;s important to talk to your health care provider if you experience these symptoms.\n<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-40\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-subheading\"> <span class=\"mntl-sc-block-subheading__text\">    Consistency <\/span> <\/h3>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-41\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>Diverticulitis can cause diarrhea (loose, watery stools), constipation (hard, very hard stools), or both.<span class=\"ql-inline-citation\" data-cite=\"4\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-43\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>Hard stools can also be a contributing factor to the development of diverticulosis, which can lead to diverticulitis.<span class=\"ql-inline-citation\" data-cite=\"9\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-46\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-subheading\"> <span class=\"mntl-sc-block-subheading__text\">    frequency and effort <\/span> <\/h3>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-47\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>If your stool is hard due to constipation, you may strain during defecation, which increases pressure in your colon and intestines. This can lead to the development of diverticula and diverticulosis.<span class=\"ql-inline-citation\" data-cite=\"5\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-49\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>A low-fiber diet can cause constipation and straining, which can cause weak areas of the colon to bulge.<span class=\"ql-inline-citation\" data-cite=\"3\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-51\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>Recurrent episodes of diverticulitis can lead to chronically irregular bowel movements.<span class=\"ql-inline-citation\" data-cite=\"7\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"heading-toc\" id=\"toc-seeking-treatment-for-diverticulitis\"\/> <\/p>\n<h2 id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-53\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block health-sc-block-heading mntl-sc-block-heading\"> <span class=\"mntl-sc-block-heading__text\">    Seek treatment for diverticulitis <\/span> <\/h2>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-54\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>Treatment for diverticulitis usually includes antibiotics (if there is an infection) and a restricted diet until the colon heals.<span class=\"ql-inline-citation\" data-cite=\"1\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-56\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>If complications from diverticulitis occur, further treatment, such as colon surgery, may be required.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-58\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>Controlling diverticulosis with a high-fiber diet can help prevent the disease from developing. Aim to get 20 to 35 grams of fiber each day from foods such as grains, vegetables, and fruits. Drinking enough fluids (at least 8 glasses per day) is also important. This helps soften the stool and make it easier to pass.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"heading-toc\" id=\"toc-diagnosing-diverticulitis\"\/> <\/p>\n<h2 id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-62\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block health-sc-block-heading mntl-sc-block-heading\"> <span class=\"mntl-sc-block-heading__text\">    Diagnosis of diverticulitis <\/span> <\/h2>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-63\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>To diagnose diverticular disease, such as diverticulosis or diverticulitis, a health care provider does the following:<span class=\"ql-inline-citation\" data-cite=\"2\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<ul id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-65\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<li>Talk about your medical history and may ask about family history<\/li>\n<li>I would like to ask you about your symptoms.<\/li>\n<li>We&#8217;ll ask about your lifestyle, including your bowel patterns, diet, and any medications you take.<\/li>\n<li>Press the abdomen to check for tenderness or a mass.<\/li>\n<li>Check heart rate, blood pressure, and body temperature<\/li>\n<li>listen to stomach sounds with a stethoscope<\/li>\n<li>In some cases, a digital (finger) rectal exam may be done.<\/li>\n<li>Order tests as needed<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-68\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-subheading\"> <span class=\"mntl-sc-block-subheading__text\">    symptoms <\/span> <\/h3>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-69\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>Symptoms of diverticulitis can be severe and appear suddenly, or they can be mild and worsen over a few days.<span class=\"ql-inline-citation\" data-cite=\"2\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-71\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>Symptoms include:\n<\/p>\n<ul id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-73\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<li>constipation and\/or diarrhea<\/li>\n<li>Abdominal pain, cramping, or tenderness, usually in the lower left part of the abdomen (which may change in intensity over time)<\/li>\n<li>bloating<span class=\"ql-inline-citation\" data-cite=\"5\"\/><\/li>\n<li>gas<\/li>\n<li>fever and chills<\/li>\n<li>nausea and\/or vomiting<\/li>\n<li>Anorexia (not feeling hungry and\/or not eating)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-76\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-subheading\"> <span class=\"mntl-sc-block-subheading__text\">    test <\/span> <\/h3>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-77\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>Symptoms of diverticulitis can be similar to those of other diseases, such as ovarian cysts. <span data-tts=\"true\">appendicitis<\/span>, peptic ulcer, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), or Crohn&#8217;s disease. It is important to receive an accurate diagnosis in order to receive appropriate treatment.<span class=\"ql-inline-citation\" data-cite=\"1\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-79\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>To make a proper diagnosis, your health care provider may perform tests such as:<span class=\"ql-inline-citation\" data-cite=\"2\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<ul id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-81\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<li>Blood test<\/li>\n<li>Laboratory testing of stool samples: A small sample of stool is collected and tested.<\/li>\n<li><span data-tts=\"true\">computed tomography<\/span> (CT): Image created using X-rays and a computer<\/li>\n<li>Ultrasound: An image created using sound waves<\/li>\n<li>Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI): X-rays that create images of internal organs and soft tissues<\/li>\n<li><span data-tts=\"true\">colonoscopy<\/span>: A long, thin, flexible tube that is inserted through the rectum and has a small, lightweight camera that views the lining of the rectum and colon.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span class=\"heading-toc\" id=\"toc-summary\"\/> <\/p>\n<h2 id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-83\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block health-sc-block-heading mntl-sc-block-heading\"> <span class=\"mntl-sc-block-heading__text\">    summary <\/span> <\/h2>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-84\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>Diverticulitis can affect bowel movements.
