Symptoms for these conditions can vary, but in general, signs that you may have a problem with your anal sphincter include:\n<\/p>\n<ul id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-35\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<li>pain and bleeding from the anus<\/li>\n<li>Problems with bowel and gas control<\/li>\n<li>Feeling of urgency to defecate<\/li>\n<li>anal secretions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-38\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-subheading\"> <span class=\"mntl-sc-block-subheading__text\">    anal stenosis <\/span> <\/h3>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-39\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>Although anal stenosis is not a common symptom, it may be associated with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). It is more common in Crohn&#8217;s disease than ulcerative colitis.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-41\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>In anal stenosis, the internal anal sphincter becomes narrow, making it difficult to defecate. Other symptoms include pain and bleeding.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-43\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>Anal stenosis can occur after surgery, especially after removal of hemorrhoids, or in association with overuse of laxatives or infection.<span class=\"ql-inline-citation\" data-cite=\"5\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-45\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>This condition may be treated with stool softeners and fiber supplements. Surgery may also be required to correct the problem.\n<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-48\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-subheading\"> <span class=\"mntl-sc-block-subheading__text\">    anismus <\/span> <\/h3>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-49\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>Anismus is a dysfunction of the pelvic floor muscles, including the external anal sphincter. This is caused by a problem with the way these muscles contract and relax during a bowel movement.<span class=\"ql-inline-citation\" data-cite=\"14\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-51\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>Symptoms of anismus include:\n<\/p>\n<ul id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-53\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<li>Having bowel movements less than 3 times a week<\/li>\n<li>straining excessively to defecate<\/li>\n<li>hard and painful stools<\/li>\n<li>stomach pain and bloating<\/li>\n<li>anal pain<\/li>\n<li>Feeling like you haven&#8217;t finished defecating yet<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-55\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>Anismus is often treated with pelvic floor muscle exercises. Botulinum toxin injections are also effective.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-58\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-subheading\"> <span class=\"mntl-sc-block-subheading__text\">    anal fissure <\/span> <\/h3>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-59\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>An anal fissure is a tear in the lining of the anus. Anal fissures often extend into the internal anal sphincter. These are caused by overstretching of the anal canal and can occur when having a very hard or large bowel movement.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-61\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>Symptoms of anal fissure include pain and a feeling of tearing when defecating. Bright red blood may stain the toilet or toilet paper. These symptoms usually occur with each bowel movement. It is not uncommon for the condition to become chronic, as the damage can worsen with each bowel movement.<span class=\"ql-inline-citation\" data-cite=\"13\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-63\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>Anal fissures can be treated with topical medications, drugs that relax the sphincter, or surgery. <\/p>\n<h3 id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-66\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-subheading\"> <span class=\"mntl-sc-block-subheading__text\">    anorectal malformation <\/span> <\/h3>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-67\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>Anorectal malformations occur in approximately 1 in 5,000 live births. This birth defect causes the anus to develop abnormally.<span class=\"ql-inline-citation\" data-cite=\"16\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-69\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>Anorectal malformations range from mild to severe and can affect the sphincter and other parts of the rectum and anus. Surgery is required to correct them.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-72\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-subheading\"> <span class=\"mntl-sc-block-subheading__text\">    anal crohn&#8217;s disease <\/span> <\/h3>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-73\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>Because Crohn&#8217;s disease can affect any part of the gastrointestinal tract from the mouth to the anus, it can also affect the anal sphincter. It is estimated that one-third of patients with Crohn&#8217;s disease have complications in the perianal region (the area of \u200b\u200bthe body around the anus).<span class=\"ql-inline-citation\" data-cite=\"4\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-75\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>People with Crohn&#8217;s disease may develop problems with their anal sphincter muscles, such as:\n<\/p>\n<ul id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-77\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<li><strong>abscess<\/strong>: Area of \u200b\u200bpus that collects after infection <\/li>\n<li><strong>crack<\/strong>: laceration of the anal canal <\/li>\n<li><strong>fistula<\/strong>: an abnormal passageway between two parts of the body, such as the anus and the skin<span class=\"ql-inline-citation\" data-cite=\"15\"\/><\/li>\n<li><strong>swelling: <\/strong>The anal sphincter may become swollen.<\/li>\n<li><strong>ulcer<\/strong>: a hole or sore in the lining of an anal muscle or other structure<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-79\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>Anal Crohn&#8217;s disease can be managed in several different ways depending on symptoms and complications. Antibiotics are often prescribed to treat infections, and sometimes surgery may be required.\n<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-82\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-subheading\"> <span class=\"mntl-sc-block-subheading__text\">    Hemorrhoids (hemorrhoids) <\/span> <\/h3>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-83\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>Hemorrhoids are swollen veins around the anus. Almost anyone can develop hemorrhoids, and they are especially problematic if you are pregnant, have inflammatory bowel disease, are over 50, or experience chronic constipation or diarrhea.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-85\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>There are two types of hemorrhoids: internal hemorrhoids and external hemorrhoids. Internal hemorrhoids are located above the internal anal sphincter. External hemorrhoids are located below the external anal sphincter.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-87\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>In some cases, the internal anal sphincter can trap hemorrhoids. This condition is called strangulated hemorrhoids and is extremely painful.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-89\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>Hemorrhoids can usually be managed at home with topical medications and regular sitz baths. Surgery is often required to correct strangulated hemorrhoids.\n<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-92\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-subheading\"> <span class=\"mntl-sc-block-subheading__text\">    fecal incontinence <\/span> <\/h3>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-93\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>Some people with IBD develop incontinence, which is the involuntary expulsion of stool from the rectum.<span class=\"ql-inline-citation\" data-cite=\"6\"\/> This can occur due to recurrence of the disease or damage to the anal sphincter muscles.\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"health-sc-block-callout--takeaway_1-0\" class=\"comp theme-takeaway health-sc-block-callout--takeaway health-sc-block-callout-base mntl-sc-block-callout mntl-block\" data-tracking-id=\"mntl-sc-block-callout\" data-tracking-container=\"true\">\n<div id=\"mntl-sc-block-callout-body_1-0\" class=\"comp expert-content takeaway mntl-sc-block-callout-body mntl-text-block\">\n<p>Fecal incontinence can be very painful for patients, and controlling the inflammation caused by IBD is important to prevent fecal incontinence.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-96\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>A damaged anal sphincter may need to be surgically fixed. In some cases, the surgeon may be able to fix the problem simply by tightening the sphincter.<span class=\"ql-inline-citation\" data-cite=\"7\"\/> In other cases, the sphincter muscle may be removed in a surgery called an anal sphincterotomy.<span class=\"ql-inline-citation\" data-cite=\"8\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-98\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>How long this repair lasts depends on how successful the surgery is and whether there are any complications.
