It may also feel like there is stool stuck in the lower digestive tract or something falling out of the anus. Pressure in the rectum can vary in intensity, from a dull tingling sensation to pain and cramping.<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-4\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>This article describes symptoms that can cause rectal tightness. It is located between the last part of the colon (sigmoid colon) and the anal sphincter.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span class=\"heading-toc\" id=\"toc-anal-fissure\"\/> <\/p>\n<h2 id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-8\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block health-sc-block-heading mntl-sc-block-heading\"> <span class=\"mntl-sc-block-heading__text\">    anal fissure <\/span> <\/h2>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-9\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>An anal fissure is a tear or crack in the tissue lining the anus that can cause pain and pressure in the rectum. Other symptoms of anal fissure include rectal bleeding and pain that lasts for several hours after defecating.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-11\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>Anal fissures are usually acute and resolve on their own with home treatments such as a high-fiber diet and warm baths.<span class=\"ql-inline-citation\" data-cite=\"19\"\/> If the anal fissure is chronic and the problem persists, surgery may be necessary.<span class=\"ql-inline-citation\" data-cite=\"5\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"heading-toc\" id=\"toc-constipation\"\/> <\/p>\n<h2 id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-15\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block health-sc-block-heading mntl-sc-block-heading\"> <span class=\"mntl-sc-block-heading__text\">    constipation <\/span> <\/h2>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-16\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>Constipation is defined as having fewer than three bowel movements per week. Symptoms may include abdominal discomfort. Stool is hard, dry, or lumpy. Stools that are difficult or painful to defecate. Or you may feel like all your stool is not coming out, which can cause pressure in your rectum.<span class=\"ql-inline-citation\" data-cite=\"7\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-18\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>Make lifestyle changes such as adding more fiber to your diet, drinking more water, and becoming more active. Other treatments may include over-the-counter (OTC) or prescription medications, biofeedback, or surgery.<span class=\"ql-inline-citation\" data-cite=\"7\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"heading-toc\" id=\"toc-diarrhea\"\/> <\/p>\n<h2 id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-22\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block health-sc-block-heading mntl-sc-block-heading\"> <span class=\"mntl-sc-block-heading__text\">    diarrhea <\/span> <\/h2>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-23\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>Diarrhea is described as loose and watery <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niddk.nih.gov\/Dictionary\/S\/stool\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">flight<\/a> It occurs three or more times a day and can be acute (lasting 1-2 days), persistent (lasting 2-4 weeks), or chronic (lasting more than 4 weeks, continuous or coming and going).<span class=\"ql-inline-citation\" data-cite=\"8\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-25\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>If you have diarrhea, slowing your bowel movements may relieve pressure. This may include taking anti-diarrheal medication and eating his BRAT (banana, rice, applesauce, tea, toast) diet. Tell your doctor before using these medicines if you have persistent or chronic diarrhea or if you have blood in your stool.\n<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"heading-toc\" id=\"toc-hemorrhoids\"\/> <\/p>\n<h2 id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-29\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block health-sc-block-heading mntl-sc-block-heading\"> <span class=\"mntl-sc-block-heading__text\">    hemorrhoids <\/span> <\/h2>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-30\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>Hemorrhoids are swollen and inflamed veins around the rectum or anus that can occur internally or externally. This condition can cause anal discomfort, pressure, pain, itching, and bleeding. Home treatments include:<span class=\"ql-inline-citation\" data-cite=\"9\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<ul id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-32\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<li>eat foods high in fiber<\/li>\n<li>Take stool softeners or fiber supplements such as psyllium <\/li>\n<li>drink enough water<\/li>\n<li>Do not strain when defecating<\/li>\n<li>Don&#8217;t sit on the toilet for a long time<\/li>\n<li>Taking over-the-counter pain relievers such as acetaminophen (Tylenol), ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), naproxen (Aleve), or aspirin<\/li>\n<li>To relieve pain, sit in a hot tub of water, called a sitz bath, several times a day.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-34\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>In some cases, treatments such as rubber band ligation, surgery, <span data-tts=\"true\">sclerotherapy<\/span>or <span data-tts=\"true\">hemorrhoidectomy<\/span> It is performed to treat hemorrhoids.<span class=\"ql-inline-citation\" data-cite=\"9\"\/><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"heading-toc\" id=\"toc-coccydynia-bruised-tailbone\"\/> <\/p>\n<h2 id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-38\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block health-sc-block-heading mntl-sc-block-heading\"> <span class=\"mntl-sc-block-heading__text\">    Coccyx pain (bruised coccyx) <\/span> <\/h2>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-39\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>injury <span data-tts=\"true\">coccyx<\/span> (end of the spine) <span data-tts=\"true\">Coccyx pain<\/span>, or a bruised coccyx. Coccydynia is often associated with an injury when falling on the coccyx, during childbirth, or when sitting on a hard surface for an extended period of time.<span class=\"ql-inline-citation\" data-cite=\"10\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-41\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>Coccidinia usually resolves slowly over time and with subsequent treatments.<span class=\"ql-inline-citation\" data-cite=\"11\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<ul id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-43\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<li>Over-the-counter painkillers and anti-inflammatory medications to reduce swelling and relieve discomfort<\/li>\n<li>Ice therapy after a fall or other trauma<\/li>\n<li>Special pillow that reduces pressure on the coccyx<\/li>\n<li>Physical therapy, massage, and stretching exercises to reduce muscle tension and stiffness<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span class=\"heading-toc\" id=\"toc-fistula\"\/> <\/p>\n<h2 id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-47\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block health-sc-block-heading mntl-sc-block-heading\"> <span class=\"mntl-sc-block-heading__text\">    fistula <\/span> <\/h2>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-48\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>A fistula is an abnormal tunnel or connection between two body parts, usually as a result of injury, surgery, infection, or inflammation.<span class=\"ql-inline-citation\" data-cite=\"13\"\/> If a fistula develops between the rectum and vagina or between the intestines and skin, it can put pressure on the rectum.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-50\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>Symptoms include:<span class=\"ql-inline-citation\" data-cite=\"14\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<ul id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-52\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<li>pain<\/li>\n<li>heat<\/li>\n<li>diarrhea<\/li>\n<li>weight loss<\/li>\n<li>Pus, blood, stool, or other foul-smelling secretions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-54\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>Depending on the location of the fistula, additional symptoms may occur. Some fistulas heal on their own without surgical closure. Other treatments may include fluids, electrolytes, antibiotics, and nutritional support.<span class=\"ql-inline-citation\" data-cite=\"14\"\/><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"heading-toc\" id=\"toc-diverticulitis\"\/> <\/p>\n<h2 id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-58\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block health-sc-block-heading mntl-sc-block-heading\"> <span class=\"mntl-sc-block-heading__text\">    diverticulitis <\/span> <\/h2>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-59\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>Diverticulitis is inflammation or infection of the diverticula (outer lining) of the colon. Bloating and gas can put pressure on your rectum. Symptoms include:<span class=\"ql-inline-citation\" data-cite=\"15\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<ul id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-61\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<li>Usually tenderness in the lower left quadrant of the abdomen<\/li>\n<li>bloating or gas<\/li>\n<li>fever and chills<\/li>\n<li>nausea and vomiting<\/li>\n<li>I&#8217;m not hungry, I don&#8217;t eat<\/li>\n<li>severe abdominal pain <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-63\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>Depending on the severity and frequency of diverticulitis, the following treatments are used:<span class=\"ql-inline-citation\" data-cite=\"16\"\/><span class=\"ql-inline-citation\" data-cite=\"15\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<ul id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-65\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<li>rest<\/li>\n<li>heating pad for the abdomen<\/li>\n<li>Painkillers (ask your doctor which painkillers you should use)<\/li>\n<li>Drink only fluids for a day or two, then gradually start drinking thick liquids and then eat food.<\/li>\n<li>Colectomy (surgery to remove part of the colon) in severe cases<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span class=\"heading-toc\" id=\"toc-inflammatory-bowel-disease-ibd\"\/> <\/p>\n<h2 id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-69\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block health-sc-block-heading mntl-sc-block-heading\"> <span class=\"mntl-sc-block-heading__text\">    Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) <\/span> <\/h2>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-70\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>Inflammatory bowel diseases (including IBD, Crohn&#8217;s disease, ulcerative colitis, or atypical colitis) cause inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-72\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>The pressure associated with IBD may be due to diarrhea or constipation caused by the disease. It may also be due to complications such as a fistula or perianal disease.  Controlling the inflammation caused by IBD is an important part of treatment.<span class=\"ql-inline-citation\" data-cite=\"3\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-74\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>Treatments for IBD include oral medications, biologics, enemas, suppositories, and lifestyle modifications.\n<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"heading-toc\" id=\"toc-rectal-prolapse\"\/> <\/p>\n<h2 id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-78\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block health-sc-block-heading mntl-sc-block-heading\"> <span class=\"mntl-sc-block-heading__text\">    rectal prolapse <\/span> <\/h2>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-79\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>Rectal prolapse occurs when the lining of the rectum, or rectal wall, falls out of the anus. Symptoms include:<span class=\"ql-inline-citation\" data-cite=\"17\"\/><\/p>\n<ul id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-81\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<li>Feeling like something is coming out of the anus<\/li>\n<li>Visible reddish lump protruding from the anus<\/li>\n<li>constipation, diarrhea, or both<\/li>\n<li>Your rectum doesn&#8217;t feel empty after defecating<\/li>\n<li>Unable to control bowel movements (fecal incontinence)<\/li>\n<li>Blood or mucus discharge from the rectum<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-83\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>Rectal prolapse that remains outside the body can be serious and requires prompt treatment. The prolapsed tissue becomes strangled, begins to lose circulation, becomes necrotic, and can die.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-85\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>If your rectal prolapse is accompanied by pain, fever, or heavy bleeding, seek emergency medical care. If the prolapse does not cause symptoms, contact your health care provider.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-87\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>Treatment usually includes surgery. Reducing or avoiding constipation is recommended to reduce the chance of recurrence.\n<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"heading-toc\" id=\"toc-prostatitis\"\/> <\/p>\n<h2 id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-91\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block health-sc-block-heading mntl-sc-block-heading\"> <span class=\"mntl-sc-block-heading__text\">    prostatitis <\/span> <\/h2>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-92\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>Prostatitis is an inflammation of the prostate gland, a walnut-shaped gland responsible for producing the liquid part of semen. Symptoms vary depending on the cause of the inflammation, but may include:<span class=\"ql-inline-citation\" data-cite=\"18\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<ul id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-94\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<li>Pain or discomfort in the abdomen, penis, scrotum, lower back, or between the scrotum and anus<\/li>\n<li>Pain in the urethra or penis during or after urination<\/li>\n<li>Urinary urgency or frequency &#8211; urinating more than 8 times a day<\/li>\n<li>Weak or interrupted urine flow<\/li>\n<li>Urinary retention &#8211; inability to completely empty the bladder<\/li>\n<li>Having trouble starting the flow of urine<\/li>\n<li>Urinary tract obstruction \u2013 complete inability to urinate<\/li>\n<li>Urinary tract infection (UTI)<\/li>\n<li>fever or chills<\/li>\n<li>nausea or vomiting<\/li>\n<li>body pain<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-96\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>Treatment depends on the type of prostatitis and may include antibiotics and other medications to reduce pain, discomfort, and inflammation. Other treatments include sitz baths, heat therapy, physical therapy, biofeedback, and acupuncture.<span class=\"ql-inline-citation\" data-cite=\"18\"\/><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"heading-toc\" id=\"toc-anal-cancer\"\/> <\/p>\n<h2 id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-100\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block health-sc-block-heading mntl-sc-block-heading\"> <span class=\"mntl-sc-block-heading__text\">    anal cancer <\/span> <\/h2>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-101\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>Anal cancer is considered rare compared to other forms of cancer. However, that percentage is increasing by about 2% every year.<span class=\"ql-inline-citation\" data-cite=\"12\"\/> A bulge or bump (lump) in the anal area can cause pressure in the rectal area.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-103\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>Surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy are all treatments for cancer. However, it is important to remember that cancer is not a common cause of rectal compression.<span class=\"ql-inline-citation\" data-cite=\"4\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"heading-toc\" id=\"toc-when-to-see-a-healthcare-provider\"\/> <\/p>\n<h2 id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-107\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block health-sc-block-heading mntl-sc-block-heading\"> <span class=\"mntl-sc-block-heading__text\">    When should you see a health care provider? <\/span> <\/h2>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-108\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<p>Constant pressure in the intestines is not a normal part of the digestive process.
