Painful defecation

Getting older has both advantages and disadvantages. The latter includes hemorrhoids. Swelling of the blood vessels outside the rectum and anus can cause severe pain when defecating. Typical symptoms include rectal pain, itching, bleeding, and sometimes prolapse (protrusion of the hemorrhoid into the anal canal). Although hemorrhoids are rarely dangerous, they can become a painful and bothersome problem again.

There are two types of hemorrhoids. The visceral type sprouts from within the rectum. External hemorrhoids occur in the anus itself. Either way, passing stool can cause pain and bleeding.

However, most hemorrhoids can be alleviated and cured with simple self-help measures. Here we will discuss effective steps you can take to treat hemorrhoids and when to seek treatment to remove them.

What is effective for hemorrhoids

Here are six self-help tips to relieve hemorrhoid pain and promote healing.

  1. Strengthens fibers. The most important thing is to add fiber to your diet. Eating foods that help hemorrhoids is best for this, but some people find that they need to take fiber supplements to get 20 to 30 grams of fiber per day. First, try a psyllium husk fiber supplement such as Metamucil or its generic equivalent. If psyllium causes gas or bloating, try a supplement containing wheat dextrin or methylcellulose.
  2. Lubricate the process. Mixing a tablespoon of mineral oil with applesauce or yogurt and eating it for breakfast or lunch can help make stools slippery near hemorrhoids. However, don’t do this for too long (if you do this, it’s a good idea to put a liner inside your underwear to absorb any oil leaks).
  3. Don’t delay. If you feel the urge, go to the bathroom immediately. There is no need to wait for a more convenient time. Holding back your bowel movements can worsen constipation and worsen hemorrhoids.
  4. Experiment with altitude. Elevating your feet on a step stool when sitting on the toilet changes the position of your rectum, making it easier for stool to pass.
  5. Ready-made remedies. Over-the-counter medications for hemorrhoids are also available. These include witch hazel-infused pads and soothing creams such as Preparation H and its common equivalents. If these don’t work, ask your doctor about preparing a prescription.
  6. Please sit down. Don’t miss out on the relief that a sitz bath brings. Using a basin that fits under the toilet seat, soak the inflamed area in warm water for 10 to 15 minutes two to three times a day.
