Gastric motility skills and experience
Norton Healthcare’s gastroenterologists are trained and experienced in treating gastric motility disorders.
Our seven gastroenterologists are board-certified and fellowship-trained to treat conditions such as gastric motility. Our company has been trusted in Louisville and Southern Indiana for over 30 years.
Gastric motility affects the body’s ability to gradually move food through the digestive system.
Advanced tests to assess digestive health
Our experts use manometry studies to assess gastric motility.
If you have pain when swallowing, your doctor may order a pressure test. Other tests can determine whether there is a blockage or stricture in the esophagus. Swallowing problems are often caused by a blockage in the esophagus, rather than a gastric motility disorder.
Manometry studies can help diagnose many esophageal conditions, including:
- Achalasia – This is a rare condition in which the muscles at the end of the esophagus remain closed during swallowing, preventing food from entering the stomach.
- Diffuse esophageal spasm – This rare swallowing disorder is characterized by a circular fold in the esophagus (sometimes called a corkscrew esophagus) that occurs when the muscles of the esophagus contract poorly.
- Scleroderma – This systemic disease can affect the motility of the digestive system. Scleroderma may prevent the lower esophageal sphincter from closing properly. This can result in severe gastroesophageal reflux disease.
