In a video posted on TikTok, gastroenterologist Dr. Saurabh Sethi revealed that scrolling through social media while sitting on the toilet puts “pressure on your rectum and anus.”

“This can lead to problems such as hemorrhoids, anal fissures, and rectal prolapse,” says Dr. Saurabh.

Up to a third of Brits suffer from hemorrhoids (also known as piles). Hemorrhoids are lumps that form in and around the buttocks due to dilation of blood vessels.

According to the NHS, these can be asymptomatic and clear up within a few days, but at other times nature’s demands can cause pain and discomfort.

In some cases, you may need to see your pharmacist to get creams to relieve pain, itching, and swelling, or treatments to improve constipation.

An anal fissure is similar, but instead of irritating the blood vessels, it is a crack or tear in the lining of the anal canal.

When you try to defecate, you experience pain that may last several hours and may bleed.

According to experts, the most serious health problem that can result from sitting on the toilet for long periods of time is rectal prolapse.

This occurs when the rectum, which is part of the large intestine, slides into the anus.

But that’s not the only reason why you shouldn’t bring your cell phone into the bathroom.

“Another problem is that it can become a breeding ground for bacteria,” he said.

“Research shows the average smartphone is dirtier than a public toilet seat, so try not to scroll while you’re on the toilet.”

But if you find yourself unable to stop scrolling when going to the bathroom, experts offer another tip.

“At least have your phone wiped down with disinfectant after you finish your errands,” he said.

Pile symptoms

The most common symptoms of hemorrhoids are:

  • Bright red blood in the stool, toilet paper, or toilet bowl
  • Pain or irritation around the anus
  • Swelling or hard lump around the anus
  • Itching near the anus
