In his place, defensive coordinator Dan Quinn, offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer and special teams coordinator John Fassel will practice Wednesday and the other days McCarthy is absent. Mr. Quinn will replace Mr. McCarthy at Wednesday morning’s press conference, and Mr. Schottenheimer will replace him at Thursday morning’s press conference.
McCarthy has only missed one game in his 17-year career, and that was in 2021 against the New Orleans Saints after testing positive for COVID-19. Dan Quinn replaced McCarthy as acting head coach for that game and has been a head coach for over five seasons since his time in Atlanta.
This will be McCarthy’s second surgery in 2023 after undergoing minor hip surgery in May that kept him out of rookie minicamp.
Coach McCarthy is scheduled to coach on Sunday, but this week’s practice format will have to be operated without a head man for at least the beginning of the week.
