Relatives of leukemia patients have increased risk of cancer

Relatives of patients with myelodysplastic tumors (MDS), acute myeloid leukemia (AML), or acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) are at increased risk of cancer, according to a study published in the February issue of the journal It was revealed. cancer epidemiology.

Nikolaj Juul Nitschke and colleagues at Copenhagen University Hospital in Denmark used linked data from the Danish Civil Registry System, the Danish Cancer Registry, and the Danish National Acute Leukemia Registry to investigate the relationship between relatives of patients with MDS/AML/ALL. We estimated the relative risk of , Danish Myelodysplastic Syndrome Database. The standardized incidence ratio (SIR) was calculated as a measure of relative risk.

A total of 13,010 first-degree relatives (FDRs) and 22,051 second-degree relatives (SDRs) were identified among 8,386 patients with MDS/AML/ALL.

The researchers found that the relative risks for all cancers except basal cell carcinoma (BCC) increased between FDR and SDR, respectively (SIR, 1.3 and 1.5).

Among FDRs, the SIR increased significantly in the combined group of malignant melanoma, BCC, and cancers of the male genital tract, urinary tract, and MDS/AML/ALL.

Among SDRs, the SIRs of malignant melanoma, BCC, and gastrointestinal and peritoneal cancers increased significantly.

“We speculate to some extent that the increased cancer risk reflects a polygenic cancer predisposition, likely interacting with environmental factors,” the authors write.
