Long-term outcome of medically treated acute appendicitis
A follow-up study of a Swedish clinical trial comparing surgery and antibiotic treatment for acute appendicitis succeeded in following up 90% of participants after 20 years. Still, more than half of patients treated nonsurgically did not experience recurrence and avoided surgery. Other than appendicitis recurrence, no other long-term risks occurred with nonsurgical management (JAMA Surge doi:10.1001/jamasurg.2023.2756).
