information

Several products are available. The characteristics of these different products are listed below.

fecal incontinence device

There are many different products available to manage long-term diarrhea and fecal incontinence. These devices have a drainable pouch attached to an adhesive wafer. This wafer has a hole cut in the center that fits into the anal opening (rectum).

When properly fitted, a fecal incontinence device can remain in place for 24 hours. If stool leaks, it is important to remove the bag. Liquid stool can irritate the skin.

Always keep your skin clean and apply a new pouch if leakage occurs.

The device should be applied to clean, dry skin.

  • Your health care provider may prescribe a barrier to protect your skin. This barrier is usually a paste. Apply the barrier to your skin before attaching the device. Placing the paste in the skin folds of the buttocks will prevent liquid stool from leaking from this area.
  • Spread your buttocks to expose your anus and attach the wafer and pouch. It may be helpful to have someone help you. The device must cover the skin without gaps or wrinkles.
  • You may need to trim the hair around the anus to help the wafer adhere to the skin.

Your enterostomy nurse or skin care nurse can provide you with a list of products available in your area.

urinary incontinence device

Urine collection devices are primarily used by men who have urinary incontinence. Women are usually treated with medication and disposable underwear.

Systems for men most often consist of a pouch or condom-like device. This device is placed securely around the penis. This is often referred to as a condom catheter. A drainage tube is attached to the tip to drain urine. This tube is placed in a storage bag and can be disposed of directly into the toilet.

Condom catheters are most effective when applied to a clean, dry penis. You may need to trim the hair around your genitals to improve grip on your device.

You should change your device at least every other day to protect your skin and prevent urinary tract infections. Make sure the condom fits snugly. However, be careful not to make it too tight. Too tight can damage the skin.
