Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy was diagnosed with acute appendicitis after experiencing abdominal pain Wednesday morning and underwent surgery Wednesday afternoon. The Cowboys expect McCarthy to return to coaching for Dallas’ Sunday night game against the Philadelphia Eagles at AT&T Stadium.
McCarthy underwent surgery on Thursday and returned home. He is scheduled to return to the team’s practice facility on Friday.
“I saw him early this morning and he didn’t look good,” Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn said Wednesday. “He said, ‘Oh, I’m hurt.’ He went to see a doctor, and that’s when it turned out it wasn’t just a stomach bug. Thankfully, right away Please fix the problem and get him back here right away.”
The Cowboys are 9-3 this season and have won four straight. Sunday’s game against the Eagles could have implications for the playoffs, as a win could put the Cowboys in a tie for first place in the NFC East.
“Do you think the tough Irishman will miss this game? We definitely expect Mike to be back in the game,” Quinn said. “We’ll take care of it and hold it down for practice. Knowing him, he wants to be online tonight and get through the red zone and third downs and everything. We certainly expect him to be excited leading up to game day.”
The plan is for three Cowboys coordinators (Quinn, offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer and special teams coordinator John Fassel) to practice starting Wednesday until McCarthy returns.
