Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy has been hospitalized with acute appendicitis.

According to the team, Dallas announced that McCarthy experienced abdominal pain on Wednesday morning and needed further tests, leading to surgery on Wednesday afternoon. NFL Network’s Jane Slater reported Wednesday afternoon that McCarthy has undergone surgery and that it went “successfully.”

McCarthy is expected to be released from the hospital and will coach Sunday night against the divisional rival Philadelphia Eagles, the team said.

The team said three Dallas coordinators will practice Wednesday: defensive coordinator Dan Quinn, offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer and special teams chief John Fassel.

McCarthy has coached at the NFL level since 1993 and has been the head coach in Dallas since 2020. His Cowboys have been on the rise this season, winning five of their last six games before facing Philadelphia, and could change the face of the team. Dallas wins NFC East race.

He will aim to return to the team in time for the important showdown.
